About Ian!
Ian started playing the trumpet under the tuition of Maurice Clarke MBE and Victor Woodward at the age of 11. It was this encouragement that led Ian to play his first solo (Hummel trumpet concerto) aged 14 at Marlborough College, Wiltshire, followed by a repeat performance at the Salisbury Playhouse. Ian was also a founder member, and principal trumpet, of the Wiltshire Youth Concert Band.
Later, Ian was fortunate to study trumpet under the late Ian Macintosh at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall in 1979/80. After leaving the Royal Artillery, Ian continued to perform with many ensembles in the Kent area, where he gained a reputation as a soloist. He moved to Northamptonshire in 2000, where he quickly established himself as a player and tutor, before moving slightly south to Bedfordshire in 2007.
Ian now teaches professionally in Bedfordshire and the Milton Keynes areas and is in demand as a player and teacher. When he isn't performing his popular solo recitals and guest appearances (accompanied by his wife, Julia) he plays principal trumpet with various ensembles including Philharmonia Britannica, the Academy of Great St Mary's, the Chamber Orchestra of St Ives and other ensembles, mainly in London and Cambridgeshire. Ian maintains his links with Kent by making irregular trips to play with Invicta Winds Orchestra and Maidstone Winds. Ian attained his LTCL in July 2010.
Some orchestral highlights in 2009 included performances of 'Brandenburg 2' in Cambridge, Mahler '4' in London and 'Messiah' in Peterborough. In March 2010 - playing Star Wars while being conducted by Darth Vader was an experience not to be missed ! 2010 also brought the opportunity to play in a concert with the comedian Rainer Hersch with Philharmonia Britannica and Mahler 1 in London and another opportunity to perform the Hummel trumpet concerto with the Academy of Great St Mary's in Cambridge. More memorable moments still to come in 2010 I'm sure - include a performance of Soldier's Tale, the launch of a new orchestral CD and a performance of Mahler 2 in London.
